Richlite’s WUI Compliance: Why It Matters for Builders and Designers
Ciana GitreShare
In wildfire-prone regions, building with safety, performance, and sustainability in mind is more important than ever. That’s why Richlite Slate exterior panels meet the rigorous requirements for construction in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas. But what does this compliance involve—and why does it matter for architects, builders, and homeowners?
What is WUI?
The Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) describes areas where human development meets wildland vegetation. This classification originated from USGS GIS modeling and is broken into two types:
- Intermix – Scattered homes or cabins within vegetation.
- Interface – Dense development adjacent to wildland areas.
Local jurisdictions designate WUI areas, which triggers special building code requirements designed to reduce wildfire risk.
California Chapter 7A: The Benchmark for Fire Safety
California’s CAL FIRE Chapter 7A program is one of the most established wildfire exterior wall standards in the U.S. Assemblies tested under this standard are widely recognized by architects, fire officials, and building departments across the western U.S., making compliance a trusted benchmark. While some jurisdictions outside California may accept Chapter 7A-tested assemblies, ultimate approval depends on the local authority having jurisdiction.
Richlite Slate has been tested and listed as a WUI exterior wall assembly under Cal Fire OSFM Listing No. 8140-2427:0001, Category 8140 – Exterior Wall Siding & Sheathing for WUI. The test standard: SFM 12-7A-1, includes a 60-minute wall test with a 10-minute burn, and the assembly is designed to withstand ember and flame exposure conditions, ready for permit submittals in WUI jurisdictions.
WUI compliance applies to the entire wall assembly, not just the exterior panels. Richlite panels are installed as part of a ventilated rain screen system, which improves moisture management, reduces trapped water risk, and enhances durability.
