At Richlite, we’re continually inspired by how creatives across industries push the boundaries of our material. With sustainability at our core, it’s exciting to see Richlite used in ways that go far beyond popular applications like cladding, countertops, or kitchen surfaces.

So when we discovered that Arcanium, a luxury gaming accessory and furniture design company, had been using Richlite in their builds, we were intrigued. Their commitment to craftsmanship, intentional design, and long-lasting quality aligns closely with our own values.

In the story below, Arcanium walks us through their creative process and how Richlite naturally became part of their vision for designing heirloom-quality gaming products.

Hear it From Them: Design Intent

The co-founders of Arcanium, Kevin and Ben, are both fans of the fantasy tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. A core aspect of D&D is dice rolling, using 7 types of dice with varying numbers of sides. Players often roll multiple dice at the same time (8 6-sided dice, all at once, for example), so many of them have a dedicated dice-rolling tray, as well as dice storage boxes to safely contain their more fragile collectible dice sets.

We always knew we wanted to make an Arcanium version of these accessories early on, but there were already many options on the market, so differentiating our product would be critical. We considered hardwood, metal alloys, leather, recycled plastic, and Richlite.

Through testing and prototypes, we found that Richlite met all of our desired properties for a material: durability, quality, physical appearance, sustainability, and ethical manufacturing, and decided to pursue the development of three products using this material -  a dice tray, dice storage box (or “coffer”), and a carrying case.

From there, we went through multiple rounds of sketchwork, modelling, and 3D-printing rapid prototypes to refine the form factor and aesthetic direction. There’s a tendency in the D&D space for accessories to be constructed of wood, leather, felt, and other economical materials, embracing fantasy-adjacent, almost toy-like craft designs. We wanted to introduce a more subtle, modern aesthetic in this segment, inspired by and catered to the game but also able to live amongst a cohesive interior decor without standing out. We decided on a combination of dark materials, gentle curves, and a bold stepped exterior motif to give the collection its signature look.

We also developed a couple of innovative features, including a squeeze-to-open function on our magnetic dice storage box, the 122 Coffer, and a cross-compatible nesting fitment across the entire product line.

Manufacturing Process: Creating Tapletop Game Accessories

The 122 Tabletop Collection is manufactured in-house in our Los Angeles workshop using precise machining processes on high-quality, carefully selected materials.

Richlite’s ability to hold fine detail not only ensures a repeatable tolerance fit between nesting products, but also allows us to step and taper the exterior profile, producing a slim top edge while maintaining material stability under high speed machining operations.

Suberra’s uniform density and excellent machinability allow for precise z-axis sculpted features, making it well-suited for small-batch production without reliance on compression molding, while also providing a resilient, non-marring surface to protect the Coffer’s contents.

Mirum, besides being a beautiful, luxurious leather substitute, is a durable material that, when bonded to the Richlite floor of the 122 Tray and 122 Case, dampens dice impacts and reduces dice bouncing, enabling both products to function effectively with a lower sidewall profile.

Manufacturing begins by blanking part material to exact dimensions, minimizing waste from sheet stock. Components are CNC-machined on a 3-axis router using a palletized vacuum fixture – first running top operations, then flipping to complete the underside. Cork feet and Mirum liners are precision-cut with a drag knife on the same CNC platform. Designed for low-volume production, the process is modular and easily scalable across smaller, parallel VMC setups. All fabrication, finishing, assembly, and packaging are completed entirely in-house at our Los Angeles workshop.
